Frame & Hitch

David French made the first CycleTote trailer for his own children in 1976. With safety the  prime consideration he developed the TIG-welded aluminum frame that has become the heart and soul of the CycleTote trailer.

Bare Trailer with automatic braking system

CycleTote's frame is hand crafted and TIG welded using 6063-T832, 6061-T6 and 2024-T3 aluminum. Drop-outs are precisely spaced and positioned to accept any full sized, front bicycle wheels. Wheels are canted inward 2 1/2 degrees for surer footing and aligned perfectly with the trailer frame to travel straight forward in the direction of travel. Combined with the center-pull hitch and the lowest center of gravity, CycleTote gives you lower rolling resistance, less tire wear, precise trailing and superior cornering stability. The tongue is easily removed, as are the quick release wheels used on all trailers not having the automatic braking system.  All standard sized CycleTote trailers are made with this frame, allowing for conversion to other CycleTote models.

Seat Post Hitch Attachment

The hitching mechanism consists of (1) a ball-joint with threaded stud connected at the front of the trailer tongue, and (2) an attachment clamped to the seat-post into which the stud is inserted and secured with a lock washer and hand knob.  The bolt to which the ball-joint is attached rotates a full 360 degrees within the tongue so that bicycle movement, including a fall, does not affect the trailer.

For towing bikes such as tandems and recumbents without a conventional seat post, special hitches can easily be made for a solidly attached rear rack.  We need only the width of the rack (usually 5 inches) and the distance from the top of the rack to the ground.  Otherwise, and for various other vehicles such as tricycles,  motor scooters, 4 wheelers, etc., give us a pic of the back of the towing vehicle and we’ll usually be able to fabricate a suitable hitch attachment.  Special hitches require a nominal additional charge.
